On a dry afternoon the gutter looks fine. No leaves sitting in the trough, no visible sludge, nothing that would explain why water sheeted straight over the front edge during last week's downpour. That gap between what you can see from the driveway and what actually happens up there during a real storm is the whole story. A gutter can be completely clear and still fail, because clear and functional are not the same thing.

It's rarely the trough itself

Most overflow complaints start with someone assuming the channel is packed with leaves, because that's the failure everyone has heard of. But the trough is wide and shallow, and it takes a lot to fill it enough to overflow along its whole length. The narrow points are the outlet hole where water drops into the downspout, the elbow right after it, and the first few feet of pipe. Shingle grit washes off every roof for as long as that roof exists, and that fine grey sand settles exactly where the water slows down to turn a corner. A tablespoon of grit sitting in the wrong spot narrows an opening enough to back water up during heavy rain, even though the trough upstream looks spotless.

Pitch you can't see from the ground

A gutter run needs to fall toward its outlet, something like an inch of drop for every forty feet of run. Set that pitch even slightly wrong, maybe because a hanger pulled loose or the fascia behind it has shifted with age, and water pools instead of running to the outlet at all. It sits in that low spot until a storm pushes more water in than the low spot can hold, and it goes over the front edge right there, nowhere near where the actual sag or blockage is. That's why the overflow point and the problem point are so often two different places on the same run.

Not enough outlet for the roof feeding it

Every gutter run drains a specific section of roof, and that roof area decides how much water has to move through the outlet during a real storm. A run built with one outlet doing the work of two, because whoever installed it never accounted for how much roof was actually feeding that stretch, overflows every time the rain gets heavy, no matter how clean the trough is. This shows up most on additions and re-roofs, where the roof footprint grew but the gutter and downspout count never changed to match it.

The downspout itself can be the bottleneck

A 2x3 downspout moves noticeably less water than a 3x4, and on a run with a lot of roof behind it, that difference is bigger than most people expect. Downspouts tend to get chosen for how they look on the wall, or for whatever size was already there, rather than for the math of how much water they need to carry. On some houses the real limiting factor for overflow isn't anything happening in the trough at all. It's the pipe.

Signs that point at each cause

  • Water sheeting over a single spot near the middle of a long run usually means a low spot from bad pitch, not a clog
  • Overflow that only happens during the heaviest storms and stays fine in light rain points at an outlet or downspout that's simply undersized for the roof feeding it
  • A gurgling sound at the downspout right before water backs up is often grit or a small nest sitting right at the elbow, not the trough
  • Overflow near a corner or where an addition ties into the original roofline usually means the gutter count never got updated when the roof did

How you actually find the real cause

The only reliable way to find where a gutter is actually failing is to run water down it and watch, not to look at it dry from the driveway. That means checking pitch with a level, running a hose from the high end of the run and timing how the water moves, and opening the downspout to check for grit sitting at the elbow. It sounds simple, and it is, but it's the step that gets skipped when a run just gets recleaned instead of actually tested, which is why the same overflow tends to come back a year later on the exact same stretch of gutter.
